Since opening its doors in the Autumn of 2018, Berenjak has continued to bring delicious traditional Iranian cooking to the streets of Soho. Tucked into an unsuspecting side street, founder and chef Kian Samyani has bought the hole-in-the-wall style eateries found in Tehran to central London, serving up an eclectic offering of Persian dishes.
Having grown up surrounded by Iranian cooking, unsurprisingly Kian has filled his menu with Persian favourites that have been reinterpreted using seasonal British produce. The menu starts with pillowy soft Taftoon and Sangak breads which are used to scoop up the vast selection of Mazeh dips and side dishes. This is followed by a choice of kebabs with meat ranging from beef rib eye chunks marinated in onion to chicken breast marinated in saffron, lemon, yoghurt and tomato. The vegetarian offering sounds just as sumptuous with a chestnut mushroom, anglum cheese and chilli kebab. However, the only pudding on offer is sure to catch anyone’s eye, a decadent baklava ice cream sandwich – one that is definitely not to be missed!
The name Berenjak itself originates from a snack of brightly coloured toasted rice that is commonly found at funfairs in Persia, a fun reflection of the rich, colourful mosaic interior and stained-glass windows in the restaurant. The open plan restaurant has a lively 10 seater bar running down one side overlooking the kitchen, with cosy tables down the other, leading down to the ‘Hayat room’ (meaning garden) at the far end. This room can be hired out for private events and gatherings, with the exposed brick walls, pattered benches and overrun with greenery it is the perfect room for a big feast with friends.
We are giving one lucky winner the chance to win a voucher of £150 to have dinner at Berenjak with a plus one. To enter the competition head over to either, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter and follow the entry criteria under the Berenjak post. Competition closes 28th July 2019 at 11pm.
